Tsunami TV program in the South

Posted in Daily Diary by Andrew Biggs on the June 4th, 2006

The BBC and HBO are filming a TV drama series in the South of Thailand. It’s about the tsunami, and it will go to air December 26, two years after the tragedy.

The Nation reports that the filming has upset a lot of local residents in Krabi and Khao Lak, because it is bringing back sad memories of the event. Worse, the company hired to film in Thailand put up posters around Krabi in April asking for “extras” to play corpses! To me, that is a very tasteless and uncaring thing to do. It doesn’t consider the feelings of local residents, many of whom lost loved ones in the tsunami. There are lots of ways you can discreetly find?? extras in a movie without putting up horrible signs like this.??

I can imagine the complaints that would erupt if the same thing was done in London or New York. “We want??people to play corpses in a movie about the World Trade disaster. Any age! Any nationality!” or: “We’re making a movie about the London subway bombings. We want??people to play corpses!” There would be a huge protest. But this camera crew thinks it’s okay to do that in Thailand.??

I wonder why. I wonder why they think humanity in Thailand is different from their own countries.

It’s just another scene of decrimination. Lots of Caucasion they didn’t even heard about Thailand. When I mentioned that I am Thais, a large number of them always thought that I came from Taiwan. They thought that they are better than us. On top of that, they are consider Thailand is the third world country !!!

Having worked in Khao Lak after the tsunami and experienced the wonderful local characters, I do find this very offensive. Okay make a movie….but advertising for extras to play corpses is a shocker!
