Monks on Hi 5

Posted in Daily Diary by Andrew Biggs on the March 6th, 2008

EVerybody is talking about the monk who picked up a women through the Hi 5 network on the internet. I worry about Buddhist monks who use Hi 5 to pick up women. I am sure this is not what the Lord Buddha intended 2,500 years ago, and indeed, if the internet were around in those days, then he probably would have proclaimed: “Stay away from the internet.”

I worry even more about what the reaction from the government is going to be. I hope they don’t ban Hi 5 (as if that is going to solve the problem of monks using the internet to meet women). Remember last year when they banned youtube? It really didn’t have any effect at all, did it, except deny us a lot of information.

My feeling is this: if a monk feels a desperate need to meet a woman, why doesn’t he just leave the monkhood? Isn’t that easier? Then he can surf the internet as much as he likes, as well as eat an extra meal a day without feeling guilty.

Khun Andrew…to be a monk is a purpose of some people because they don’t need to work and seem to get paid as well (when people called them for any Buddist purpose) that’s why they don’t want to leave the monkhood.Flankly speaking, nowaday, I don’t want to offer any food to the monk because of their behave as you can see at the end of Ekamai Road you will find the monk waiting in front of the market for food and even in front of the Assumption School at soi Sathorn 10 a couple of monk waiting there for food as well…
